Live Events
In a dynamic interchange between artist, models
and the audience, Terry Niedzialek creates hair sculptures using
the hair of live models. “I use objects I gathered on walks
in nature: tree branches, bird’s nest, gourds, ocean sponges,
moss, feathers and bones, as well as natural and man-made objects
I purchased, and integrate them into the hair, which is molded
and built up with clay slip, and then painted over all for irony
and poetics.” A hairdresser turned hair sculptor, she is
part of a lineage ranging from tribal Africa to 18th Century France,
and from Marcel Duchamp to Carmen Miranda, and presents this ancient
art form in a fresh way. The hair sculptures are an extension
of the body and the human spirit; they parade our identities,
empower us and celebrate life. The creation of a hair sculpture
is a ritual of personal and planetary transformation.
